Preserve printf-style format substitution when piping server logs to browser console - #479
Server log messages that use console format strings (%s, %d, %c, etc.) are now substituted correctly when forwarded to the browser devtools console, including the default enhanced-logs path where the source-location prefix sits before the user's arguments. Previously the format string was passed through as a plain argument, so substitutions were not applied and the raw %s tokens appeared in the panel.
The SSE bridge that forwards server-side console.log/console.error did not detect format strings in all cases: with enhanced logs enabled (the default), enhanceConsoleLog prepends a LOG /path:line:col prefix, so the real format string was no longer the first argument and the substitution path was skipped. This now accounts for the enhanced-log prefix, the direct SSE path, and the %c/empty-argument edge cases. Closes#435.
I have tested this code locally with pnpm test:pr.

This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Server logs piped to the browser console now preserve printf-style formatting, including substitutions for values and CSS styles.
Escaped percent signs and %j substitutions are handled correctly, while substitutions without matching values remain literal text.
Logs without format substitutions continue to display with their styled prefix, including plain messages and messages whose first value is not a string.
Empty substitution values are retained when needed to complete the formatted message.
The virtual console now preserves supported printf-style substitutions in piped server logs when it adds the styled server prefix. Tests cover formatted and plain messages. A changeset requests patch releases for the affected packages.

Summary
Preserve format substitutions in server log output packages/devtools-bundler-core/src/virtual-console.ts
Server-log handling detects supported substitutions with following arguments and retains empty transformed strings when a format string is active. It passes the format string with the styled prefix and remaining arguments. Otherwise, it uses the existing styled-prefix handling.
Test format handling and record patch release packages/devtools-bundler-core/src/virtual-console.test.ts, .changeset/fresh-mails-bow.md
Tests cover substitution-like text without following arguments, formatted strings, CSS and empty substitutions, plain messages, and non-string first arguments. The changeset requests patch releases for @tanstack/devtools-bundler-core and @tanstack/devtools-vite.
Enhanced server logs appear to work, but their formatting path lacks a regression test. Add that test before merging or accept the bounded coverage gap.

Explanation
The changes satisfy #435. getConsoleFormatIndex detects format strings in direct SSE entries and after the enhanced-log prefix. The browser call combines the server prefix with the format string and passes the remaining values for substitution. normalizeServerFormat handles %s, %d, %c, %j, %%, and missing or empty arguments. Tests cover these formatting cases and non-format logs.

The console pipe moved to devtools-bundler-core on main. Keep main's
server error test helper next to the shared setup helper, and add
devtools-bundler-core to the changeset.
Only preserve the format string when arguments follow it, so a literal
message like "CPU at 100%c" stays on the plain path.
Merged main in 7b1baa6. The console pipe moved to devtools-bundler-core on main, so this change moved with it and the changeset now lists that package too. The only conflict was in the test helpers; I kept main's server error helper next to this PR's shared setup.
In packages/devtools-bundler-core, vitest run (222 tests) and tsc pass, and eslint and prettier are clean on the changed files.
This also addresses the CodeRabbit finding on getConsoleFormatIndex: the format string is now only preserved when arguments follow it, so CPU at 100%c on its own stays on the plain path, and there is a test for that case.
Add a handler test for the enhanced-log prefix path.
The handler's index-1 branch formats the server prefix with the following format string. No current handler test sends an enhanced prefix at args[0] followed by a format string at args[1]. A regression in that branch would not fail the suite. The browser %c fixture cannot cover it, because args[0] would take the index-0 path. Use an ANSI-styled prefix with no %c:

Add a handler test in the virtual console tests for the enhanced-prefix index-1
path: dispatch a log entry with an ANSI-styled prefix at args[0], a format
string at args[1], and its substitution value afterward, then verify the
substitution value and server styles are passed through while the format string
remains intact. Use a prefix without %c so the test exercises the
enhanced-prefix branch rather than the index-0 path.

Browser consoles have no %j, and a plain %% replacement would turn %%s
into a live directive and shift arguments. Walk the format left to right
and pass both as %s with a ready-made value at the same position.
Add an SSE regression test for enhanced prefixes before the format string.
enhanceConsoleLog prepends the server LOG ... \n → argument before the original format string. The current SSE tests do not exercise this reachable index-1 path. Add an assertion that preserves both the enhanced prefix and the substitutions.
