Summary

Fixes the Snowflake alter-table ordering when a column being dropped is still named in the current clustering key, and when a new clustering key references a column not yet added.

Snowflake sequence (when the old key names a dropped column)

  1. DROP CLUSTERING KEY — before any DROP COLUMN of a column the old key still names.
  2. Column changes (drops, then adds) — in their existing schema-diff order.
  3. CLUSTER BY — after all column changes, if the target table is clustered.

When no column being dropped belongs to the current key the historical position is kept: column changes first, then the single clustering change at the end.

BigQuery and StarRocks unchanged

Both engines continue to use the base ClusteredByMixin behaviour: column changes first, then the clustering change appended at the end. Their existing tests confirm this order is preserved.

Implementation

The mixin's get_alter_operations previously computed a single insert position via _clustering_alter_position. That hook is replaced by _apply_clustering_operation, which the base class implements as a simple append. SnowflakeEngineAdapter overrides it to emit up to two clustering statements (DROP CLUSTERING KEY early; CLUSTER BY at the end) when needed.

Test cases (all in tests/core/engine_adapter/test_snowflake.py)

Case Operations
Drop the key and its column DROP CLUSTERING KEY → DROP COLUMN
Shrink key (a,b)→(a) and drop b DROP CLUSTERING KEY → DROP COLUMN b → CLUSTER BY (a)
Add c and cluster by c (unclustered table) ADD COLUMN c → CLUSTER BY (c)
Drop b, add c, change key b→c DROP CLUSTERING KEY → DROP COLUMN b → ADD COLUMN c → CLUSTER BY (c)

Evidence

uv run pytest tests/core/engine_adapter/test_snowflake.py tests/core/engine_adapter/test_bigquery.py tests/core/engine_adapter/test_starrocks.py tests/core/engine_adapter/test_redshift.py -q --tb=line -k cluster

Prior work

Srujan Kumar Gandla (@srujankgandla) first reported this bug and opened #6095 with a patch. The sequencing spec for this fix comes from the review comment on that PR. This PR keeps the reorder on Snowflake only and uses a two-statement approach (DROP CLUSTERING KEY early, CLUSTER BY late) rather than moving a single statement to position 0, which avoids the problem of setting the new key before new columns are added. Thank you to @srujankgandla for the investigation and the first patch.

Fixes #5813

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved the ordering of table schema changes when dropping columns that are part of a clustering key, helping prevent errors during table alterations.
    • Corrected how clustering-key changes and removals are handled alongside column changes, including cases where dropped columns are not part of the current key.
    • Improved consistency of clustering-key handling across supported data warehouses.

Walkthrough

The shared alter-operation mixin now delegates clustering-operation placement to an adapter hook. Snowflake uses the hook to order clustering changes around column drops that reference the current clustering key. Tests cover Snowflake ordering and schema-diff behavior in BigQuery, Redshift, and StarRocks.

Changes: Clustering Alter Operation Ordering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Position clustering changes around Snowflake column drops
sqlmesh/core/engine_adapter/mixins.py, sqlmesh/core/engine_adapter/snowflake.py
The mixin passes clustering operations to an adapter hook. Snowflake places a key drop before a matching column drop and appends a key change after column operations. It parses and normalizes key identifiers to compare them with dropped columns.
Verify Snowflake clustering operation ordering
tests/core/engine_adapter/test_snowflake.py
Tests cover clustering-key changes and removals, ordering with column additions and drops, operation targets, and identifier normalization.
Check schema-diff behavior across adapters
tests/core/engine_adapter/test_bigquery.py, tests/core/engine_adapter/test_redshift.py, tests/core/engine_adapter/test_starrocks.py
BigQuery and StarRocks tests check clustering-key removal alongside column drops. Redshift tests check the type and count of generated column-drop operations.

Possibly related issues

  • SQLMesh/sqlmesh#5813 — Describes a Snowflake failure when a dropped column remains in the clustering key. This change orders the clustering alteration before the matching column drop.

Suggested reviewers: eakmanrq, erindru, sineline

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review c808a

Snowflake schema changes can still fail when a dropped column appears in a case-sensitive or function-based clustering key. Resolve those matching cases before merging unless that migration limitation is explicitly accepted.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to c808a

The change is narrowly scoped to Snowflake schema alterations and preserves existing table targets and schema-change checks. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Recovery after a partially completed clustering change remains uncertain.

No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed DDL transition is bounded to each current Snowflake table with a matching clustered-column drop and a clustering change. The inserted operation copies the existing operation's table identity rather than selecting another asset.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The new hook operates on existing schema operations and table metadata, then uses the existing execution path. Comparison with the base establishes no new caller, credential handling, authorization bypass, or cross-table authority expansion in this changed path.

Emit the new column before the replacement clustering key.

SchemaDiffer._get_operations emits drops before adds. When the current key contains old_col and the replacement key contains newly added new_col, Snowflake inserts CLUSTER BY new_col before DROP old_col, but also before ADD new_col. alter_table then executes a clustering expression that references a column that does not exist yet.

Emit this mixed change as ADD new_col, CLUSTER BY new_col, then DROP old_col. Moving the clustering operation only after the drop would retain Snowflake's clustered-column failure.

Normalize only the clustering key, not the dropped column name.

columns() preserves the metadata column name, and TableAlterDropColumnOperation passes that name directly to the drop expression. A column named partition_month is therefore dropped as "partition_month". Snowflake reports its key as LINEAR("partition_month").

The code at snowflake.py:718-720 normalizes the dropped name to PARTITION_MONTH, while the quoted key remains partition_month. The comparison can fail, so the clustering change can remain after the drop. Snowflake can then reject the DROP COLUMN with error 003203.

The same normalization can match a lowercase column against "PARTITION_MONTH", even though those quoted Snowflake identifiers refer to different columns. Compare the key names with the raw dropped-column name. Update the normalization tests at tests/core/engine_adapter/test_snowflake.py:1509-1579.

Extract column references from key expressions, not only the top-level name.

cluster_key_expressions can contain function expressions, for example LINEAR(DATE_TRUNC('day', "TS")). Snowflake also rejects dropping a column that appears inside such an expression.

For a function node, .name returns an empty string or the function name. It does not return the column name. The set therefore never contains TS. The reorder does not run, and the DROP COLUMN still fails with error 003203.

Collect every column and identifier referenced by each key expression. Use find_all(exp.Column) on each expression. Keep the expression itself if it is a bare column or identifier.

Replace the substring checks with exact SQL assertions.

"B" in sql_calls[1] always passes. The drop statement starts with ALTER TABLE, and TABLE contains an uppercase B. The check does not identify the dropped column.

"C" in sql_calls[2] is narrower but still weak. It passes for any added column whose name contains C, so it does not confirm that column C is added.

Compare each rendered statement with its full expected SQL, as the exact-SQL assertion at line 1106 does. The operation type checks above do not check column names, so the exact statements are the only check that identifies the dropped and added columns.

- Around line 1403-1404: Replace the substring checks on sql_calls[1] and
sql_calls[2] with assertions comparing each rendered statement to its full
expected SQL, including the dropped column B and added column C; follow the
exact-SQL assertion pattern already used in this test.
- Line 1495: Remove the tautological assertion from the test near the generated
SQL checks; it always passes because of “or True.” Keep the existing meaningful
SQL and operation-target assertions unchanged.

…and replacing the key

Snowflake rejects DROP COLUMN while the column is still in the clustering key,
and also rejects CLUSTER BY on a column that has not been added yet.

The correct Snowflake sequence when the current key names a column being dropped:
1. DROP CLUSTERING KEY — before any drop of a column the old key still names.
2. Column changes (drops and adds) — in their existing schema-diff order.
3. CLUSTER BY — after all column changes, if the target table is clustered.

When no column being dropped belongs to the current key the historical position
is kept: column changes first, then the clustering change at the end. BigQuery
and StarRocks are unaffected; they continue to use the base mixin which appends
the clustering change after all column changes.

The mixin now calls _apply_clustering_operation() instead of computing a single
insert position. SnowflakeEngineAdapter overrides that hook to emit up to two
clustering statements (DROP CLUSTERING KEY early; CLUSTER BY at the end) when
needed, while every other ClusteredByMixin engine keeps the one-statement append.
