Fixes this issue #5761.

And its a new version of this PR #5723 - so, it can be closed.

Description

Load custom materialization during cleanup processes so janitor and destroy commands can delete custom-materialized models when the context uses load=False.

Test Plan

  • Passed: python -m pytest tests/core/integration/test_aux_commands.py::test_janitor_loads_materialization -q --tb=short --disable-warnings

Checklist

  • I have run make style and fixed any issues
  • I have added tests for my changes (if applicable)
  • All existing tests pass (make fast-test)
  • My commits are signed off (git commit -s) per the DCO

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Cleanup now loads materializations before removing expired environments and snapshots, including when run from a fresh context.
    • Materializations are loaded only once, independently of general context loading, avoiding repeated loading during context operations.
    • Running cleanup from a fresh context no longer requires general model loading, while still allowing expired materialization tables to be removed.
    • Environment invalidation is prevented when materialization loading fails during cleanup.

Thanks! The fix is right. I reproduced the bug with a project that defines its own materialization in materializations/: I applied a plan in one process, then ran cleanup from a fresh Context(..., load=False).

  • On main, both run_janitor and destroy fail with Materialization strategy with name 'proj_local_mat' was not found.
  • With this branch, both succeed. destroy is covered because _destroy goes through _run_janitor. This also fixes the cleanup that run() triggers before it loads materializations itself.

One request for the test: as written, it can't hit the bug.

  • custom_full comes from the examples/custom_materializations package, which is installed and registered through entry points, so it's always found.
  • The context has already been loaded by the plan call, so _load_materializations() returns early. The spy only checks that the call happened.

Could you change it so the materialization is defined in the project's own materializations/ folder, and cleanup runs from a fresh Context(paths=..., load=False) in a separate process? Materialization classes are registered globally once imported, so the plan and the cleanup need separate processes, e.g. subprocess.run([sys.executable, "-c", ...]). Something like:

# setup, in one process: write materializations/mine.py + models/m.sql, then plan
# and invalidate "dev"
# cleanup, in a second process:
ctx = Context(paths=[tmp_path], config=config, load=False)
ctx.run_janitor(ignore_ttl=True) # fails on main, passes with this fix

Walkthrough

The context tracks materialization loading separately from context loading. Destruction and janitor cleanup load materializations before changing state. Integration tests cover repeated loading, destruction failure, and janitor cleanup in a fresh interpreter.

Changes: Materialization loading and cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track materialization loading
sqlmesh/core/context.py, tests/core/integration/test_aux_commands.py
GenericContext uses a dedicated flag to track materialization loading. _load_materializations skips repeat loads after loading completes. A test checks loader call counts.
Load materializations before cleanup
sqlmesh/core/context.py, tests/core/integration/test_aux_commands.py
_destroy and _run_janitor load materializations before their operations. Tests check that a loading error prevents environment invalidation and that janitor cleanup removes a table without loading the full context.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: mday-io

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 8a7ed

Destruction can fail for projects whose custom materializations cannot be imported twice. Load them before reading snapshots prior to merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 8a7ed

Loading materializations before cleanup improves failure containment: loading errors stop cleanup before environments are invalidated. Cleanup now also executes project materialization code, so its security exposure depends on project-file trust and cleanup-process privileges. Those deployment assumptions were not established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Materialization initialization runs across all configured project loaders before environment-specific cleanup filtering. Because modules execute in-process, their potential authority is the cleanup process's effective filesystem, network and credential access, not merely the selected environment's deletion scope. Actual runtime privileges and isolation were not supplied.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A party able to modify a discovered materialization Python file can have its module initialization execute when lazy-context cleanup is invoked. This is a newly reachable execution path, not a verified privilege escalation: the evidence does not establish that such writers are less trusted than cleanup operators or that cleanup has greater authority than normal project execution.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new ordering places SQLMesh cleanup state mutations after successful materialization initialization. It does not sandbox imported Python or constrain its side effects. The destruction test checks that a loader exception leaves the production environment uninvalidated.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — A broken materialization now stops the entire cleanup attempt before SQLMesh cleanup writes, including cleanup of unrelated objects. Loading exceptions are outside the later deletion-failure warning and force-delete handling. This is the intended fail-closed behavior, with an operational dependency on importable project code.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For deployments separating project authors from privileged cleanup operators, explicitly validate the project-code trust assumption. Use trusted immutable project inputs or isolate materialization execution, and limit cleanup credentials to the required resources.

Explanation

The title "fix: load materializations during cleanup" matches the main change. The summary shows that janitor and destroy now load materializations before their cleanup or state operations. The title is short, specific, and uses the conventional fix: prefix.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description links the issue and the superseded PR, states the purpose (janitor and destroy can delete custom-materialized models when the context uses load=False), gives a test command with its result, and includes the completed checklist. It does not describe the implementation approach, such as the loaded flag or the added tests, and it has no separate test-description detail beyond the single pytest command. These gaps are minor, so the description is mostly complete.

Following up on CodeRabbit's double-load comment: it's real. run is in SKIP_LOAD_COMMANDS, so sqlmesh run uses an unloaded context, and with this change a prod run imports the project's materializations/ files twice: once in the janitor, then again in run(). I checked it with a project-local materialization: the file is imported twice and the run still succeeds, so it isn't a blocker. It would be cleaner to track that materializations are loaded (for example a _materializations_loaded flag on Context that _load_materializations() checks and sets), so the second call is a no-op.

The test change from my earlier review is still the main thing needed before merge.

Thanks, both changes look good. The subprocess test fails on main with the original error, and run now imports materializations once. I'll resolve the two CodeRabbit threads.

Before CI can pass: 3 of the 4 commits are missing DCO sign-off (06a3473, 3f13644, 08144b5). You can fix that with:

git rebase --signoff c4dbac4
git push --force-with-lease

One small optional change: in test_janitor_loads_materialization, drop check=True from subprocess.run. Right now it raises before the assert result.returncode == 0, result.stdout + result.stderr line, so a failure in CI only shows "exit status 1" and no traceback.

Thanks @mday-io for being patient with me, I've signed all the commits and dropped check=True from subprocess.run - its a good catch, nice :)

Major · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Load materializations before _destroy invalidates environments.

_destroy sets expiration_ts on every environment, including prod, before _run_janitor loads project materialization files. If a materialization file raises during that load, destroy fails after the invalidation writes commit. remove_state does not run.

The expiration filter has no prod exclusion. A later janitor run that loads materializations successfully treats prod as expired and can drop its views and delete its state records. This can happen after destroy has already reported failure.

Calling _load_materializations() at the start of _destroy moves the import before any state write. A failed import then stops destroy with nothing invalidated. The _materializations_loaded guard makes the later call in _run_janitor a no-op, so the janitor path keeps its current behavior.

Suggested fix

     def _destroy(self) -> bool:
+ # Load materializations before any state change, so a failing import aborts destroy without invalidating environments.
+        self._load_materializations()
